I would not describe myself as high-maintenance. It is not that I think I require three sequin dresses, a couple velvet dresses, and a number of leather pieces ranging from shorts to a shift dress. It is that I greatly enjoy the act of dressing. Anyone who knows me knows this is true. I mean, I just referred to clothing as "pieces." This spring I wore a different black dress every day for 30 consecutive days just because I could. It could have gone further, but even I got bored of all the black. No, that's a lie. I love black. It's my favorite color.
That said, I am no nonsense when it comes to travel packing. No frills. Just the bare minimum that will fit in a backpack. I'm comfortable with trimming (for example, chopping off a foot worth of hair in anticipation of this trip), but packing this trip proved challenging. First off, I never knew technical clothing existed before George. Performance wear in my vernacular referred to cashmere and silk. I, however, quickly learned that technical clothing does not come in black. Somewhere along the way, there was a unilateral decision among companies producing "gear" that only bold, might I say florescent, colors could adequately demonstrate how high performing the garments were. They wick! They quick dry! They block UV rays! They only come in hot pink!
Yet, where there is a will there is grey, which is the color palette for the foreseeable future. You can take the girl out of NYC, but you can't take the monochrome city spirit out of the girl.
So, goodbye abundance of pretty frocks and hello to 7 pounds of the clothes for 2-3 years. I'm actually looking forward to it.

A big thank you to my best friend, Jillian, for saving the day with an extra tank top and some Smart Wool socks when I realized my zeal to purge left me a little too short on clothing. True love is giving away your Smart Wool.
